Beth Sholom's Weaving Room
About Sandie Hinderliter

Sandie Hinderliter is an experienced weaver with a passion for sharing this timeless art. In her years as an Artist in Education with the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, she has taught more than 1,942 elementary, middle, high school and special ed students.

Depending on your needs, timeframe, and classroom grade level, Sandie will design a custom program. Your students will:
-- Use a 19th century pattern to complete a group project, which will become part of the school's permanent collection.
-- Complete one of a variety of individual projects to take home.
-- Card, dye, spin, and weave from raw wool.
-- Learn about textile history and crafts.
-- Learn to read a weaving pattern.

Sandie's art is inspired by her grandmother, a weaver in the Pennsylvania Dutch tradition. A production weaver since 1980, Sandie spent two years studying with a Swedish weaver and uses only natural fibers such as linen, wool, silk, and cotton. The majority of her art is based on 19th century patterns. Here are more details on Sandie's background:
-- A passion of Textile History e.g.; Middle Ages, Colonial America, and the Industrial Revolution.
-- Only area artist to receive a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives upon selection as an artist for Pennsylvania Made Crafts, Inc.

-- Has participated in more than 33 juried shows.
-- Finished products are sold in retail outlets in the eastern U.S.
-- Educated at the University of Pittsburgh.
