'Explorer' Primocane-Fruiting Black Raspberry

(U.S. Plant Patent 17,727)

Starting from a chance wild primocane-fruiting (fall-bearing) seedling found in Hudson Valley, New York, Pete Tallman has developed a new primocane-fruiting black raspberry cultivar named 'Explorer'. Explorer is an F2 generation seedling of the original seedling crossed with a large-fruited wild selection from Arkansas.

As grown in Colorado, after tip pruning in late June to increase the fruit count, berries start ripening in late August to early September. By suppressing floricanes and avoiding primocane pruning, berries start ripening in mid to late August. Berries average 2 grams at the first picking from a primocane, and size tends to trail off as the season progresses.

The primocane-fruiting trait is reliable. Each primocane carries 50 or more berries.

Plants were distributed for university and commercial trials in spring 2006 and spring 2007. The first evaluation crop will be autumn 2007. Plants are not yet available for sale.

The U.S. Plant Patent for 'Explorer' black raspberry was issued on May 15, 2007. For additional, excruciating detail about Explorer, see the official U. S. Patent Office description at PP17,727 Black Raspberry Plant named 'Explorer'. Here is an unofficially compiled PDF file version of the page images.
