Starting from a chance wild primocane-fruiting (fall-bearing) seedling found in Hudson Valley, New York, Pete Tallman has developed a new primocane-fruiting black raspberry cultivar named 'Explorer'.

Explorer is an F2 generation seedling of the original wild seedling crossed with a large-fruited wild selection from Arkansas.

Unfortunately, during evaluation trials, it was discovered that Explorer is not self-fruitful and requires an outside pollinator. As a result, commercialization trials for Explorer have been terminated.

Commercialization attempts are being switched over to another, self-fruitful selection, PT-2A4 Black Raspberry.

Open-pollinated seeds from Explorer black raspberry are available within the US for a nominal postage charge. For researchers, open-pollinated seeds are also available from National Clonal Germplasm Repository, Corvallis, Oregon.
