Art
has always been a part of my life. I loved to draw, paint and sculpt as a
child and in that respect, I guess I have never grown up. Over the years,
I have painted, done fiber arts with weaving and knitting, photography,
book arts and since 1993, polymer clay.
Why polymer
clay?
When
I first learned about polymer clay, it was love at first sight.
Finally I had found a medium that has so
many vistas that one can never get bored with it. I started out making
canes and turning them into beads but I soon discovered that I did not
like canework. I began experimenting with sculpture, collage
and surface design. Now my work reflects my interest in combining many
materials with polymer clay. I make jewelry, dolls, boxes and
vessels, books and I am always
looking for something new to do. This summer I learned how to combine
polymer clay and motors, how to make whimsical figures from eggs and some
wonderful surface design techniques.
Keeping
Busy!
I
retired in 1997 after 31 years as a librarian at the Detroit Public
Library. Ideally, I should have more time for my art, but there are
days when I wonder how I ever found time to work a real job. I
attend the National Polymer Clay Guild's annual retreat in May and I also
try to go to other polymer clay events. I have attended the
Ravensdale Conference twice, taken a class at Karen Murphy's home on
Whidby Island, Washington State. In 2001 I took a week-long class with
Gwen Gibson in Soreze France. I am active in my local polymer clay guild (MDPAG)
where
I was secretary and now I am our Web Goddess
and president.
Our guild brings in teachers so I have had a chance to take classes with
Kathleen Amt, Donna Kato, Lindly Haunani,
Pier Voulkos, Tory Hughes to name a few. I am also active in our
local doll guild - Doll Artisans Guild
of Michigan. I have many wonderful friends all over the country as a
result of my involvement with polymer clay. The polymer clay
community is very sharing and caring about each other.

Macduff
-
CEO
Cat Executive Officer
(1983-2001)
Macduff was in charge of everything in
his domain.
He loved to help me with
my work by adding cat hair and
paw prints. He is greatly missed.

Nikki
- Assistant Cat
(February 2001- )
Nikki
is a Maine Coon Cat. Right
now she is not interested in helping
me with my art work. She likes
to knock things off my work space
with her long legs and huge paws.
