Rachel Greenberg Wins Super Pro Class in Albuquerque
Just three short months after earning her NHRA competition license, 16 year-old Rachel Greenberg drove her dragster to victory in the Super Pro class Saturday night at Albuquerque Dragway. Greenberg waded through 6 tough rounds of competition to take the event win. She had a hard road to the final as she found herself matched up against racers that are in the top 10 in the season points standings in 5 out of the 6 rounds. The final round was generally acknowledged as one of the best in recent memory as Rachel had a .009 second reaction time to the starting light and then ran an 8.040 elapsed time on an 8.04 dial-in. Runner-up Kyle Wall had a very good .015 second reaction time and ran 7.842 on a 7.84 dial-in, giving Greenberg the win by a slim .008 seconds.
"The years of racing Junior Dragsters really prepared me for the transition to full-sized race cars", noted Greenberg. "I honestly did not think I would win an event in my first year of driving the dragster. I was pretty sure that my #2 qualifying performance at the NHRA Divisional race in Denver in June would be the highlight of my year. Although I have won lots of Jr. Dragster events, this first win in professional competition is really special. The key to winning in the "big" cars is the same as it is in the Junior Dragster - good reaction times, running on the dial-in, driving the finish line and some luck. It also helped that my Dad, Lyle, was really on his game as the crew chief."
At 4'10" tall and 85 pounds, Greenberg still often gets mistaken for a Junior Dragster driver at the track. Her 1,800 pound dragster has a Chevrolet engine that produces about 900 horsepower. One of Greenberg's goals is to break into the 7-second zone, a goal she hopes to accomplish later this year when she races in Phoenix, AZ at the NHRA Bracket Finals. The Phoenix track is at a much lower altitude than Albuquerque, allowing her engine to make even more power.
