What is Pysanky?

The art of creating Pysanky, an ancient and beautiful form of Ukrainian folk art, dates back to 2000 B.C..

The pysanky originated in the times prior to Christ to celebrate the cult of the sun and has evolved to become a way of life for the Ukrainian people. Pysanky can be found in their poetry, folk tales, songs and religion. During Easter, there is a pysanka (singular) in every Ukrainian home.

The word pysanky comes from the Ukrainian verb "pysaty," which means, "to write." Simply explained, it is an ancient design method using a beeswax and dye resistance technique, similar to batik. The original sun symbols were brought to the Ukraine by way of the Black Sea. While other countries enjoyed explosions in trade and travel which gave rise to alternative art forms, the more isolated geographical location of the Ukraine allowed its people to concentrate on the rich ornamentation of pysanky design.

Pysanky remains a symbolic life form, involving 3 symbolic meanings:
1) the symbolism of the egg itself (life)
2) the symbolism of the design (see below)
3) and the symbolism of color (For those that have the "code" it reveals the secrets of an entire culture. To those who cannot decipher the code, it remains a mystery!)

Black - Remembrance, eternity, and death.
White - Purity, birth, virginity, and ignorance
Lavender - Patience, power, royalty.
Yellow - Spirituality, youth, light, purity, happiness, wisdom.
Green - Youth, growing, renewal, freshness, hope (in Christianity, victory of life over death.)
Red - Beauty, love, passion, enthusiasm.
Orange - Endurance, strength, power.
Brown - Earth
Blue - Sky and good health from good air

The Symbolism of Design is, perhaps, the most involved. For example; the Sieve, or criss-cross pattern is a very common motif on many psyanky. It is the symbol for dividing good from evil. In Christian times, it is also thought to be representative of a fishing net and of Christ's call to his disciples to become the "fishers of men." A rosette, or star burst pattern is the most beloved symbol on pysanky, for it represents the sun, which is a giver of life.

This chess game is handmade and depicts man (Industry) versus nature. The Nature side features birds, stones, logs, eggs and other natural material from earth. Whereas the Industry or Man side is depicted with various machine metal such as bolts, rachet parts, nuts and other industry related pieces. This has never been used. It won't last for long! So jump on it and buy it before anyone else. This piece is one-of-a-kind, a Frey original.
