Log 13 - Sailing Sailing |
| Friday July 28 - Oyster Bay, Lake Charlevoix Just had a GREAT sail in from Beaver Island. The wind was forecasted to be E & then backing to NE 10-15. We came out of the harbour with the full main up and then unrolled the full jib. As we rounded the last marker out of St. James it became obvious that we had a bit too much sail up. We were flying along with a GPS ground speed of 8.2 with our log reading 8.5 knots. We were rail in the water and to quote Robin, "HAVING TOO MUCH FUN!" For the first time since we owned the Panda 34 we actually double reefed the main sail. With the shortened main and full jib we were still making 7.2 knots but having a much nicer ride. After about about 2 hours the wind started to lighten. We went to a single reef, then no reef, then hoisted the staysail also. After another hour we were motoring sailing. Apparently Mother Nature felt sorry for me. After about 30 minutes of motor sailing the wind came back up and we sailed at about 6.4 knots all the way into Charlevoix. John, Shelly, and Vladi are now in their new house in Boyne City. We are going to check out the place and have dinner with them tonight. In fact we have to jump into the dinghy now to go meet them at the beach. More to come R&R |
