Log 9 - Marquette Bay, Michigan |
| As of today we're starting to move back towards
home. Tonight (Monday July 24) we are anchored in Marquette Bay, in the
Les Cheneaux's. This Bay is about 8 miles from Mackinaw Island. It is very
picturesque and QUIET! In the morning we are going to head for Cheboygan, Michigan. We have been thinking about making this our homeport. One of the couples in the Soo we had met several years ago in the NC. They live in Cheboygan and are going to show us around. Since most of our cruising is done in the North Channel, this would be a perfect jumping off spot. We would be a day sail from Meldrum Bay, Harbour Island, or Blind River. The run up and back down Lake Michigan is getting very tiresome. This location would give us 3 more weeks of cruising time in the North Channel, which is really where we want to be! We had a nice easy motor sail from Harbour Island this morning. After waking up, my first job of the day was to put on my scuba gear and check the damage from running aground. God what a wake up call! The water was VERY COLD! Other than a few cosmetic gouges on the bottom front edge of the keel everything was fine. When we ran aground I would have bet that we had torn the entire keel off. If you've ever put a boat on the rocks you know the sound! We had a Captain Ron moment this morning! As we were leaving Harbour Island this morning I went below to make breakfast. As I was cooking the bacon I noticed a powerboat moving very slowly behind us. Now that's a strange thing, A POWERBOAT MOVING SLOWLY! Soon they were right beside and talking to Robin. When I popped my head out of the companionway they asked which of the islands ahead of us was Surveyor’s Island. We pointed at it and off they went! Apparently they were from the Capt. Ron School of boating. Lesson # 1: If you get lost you can always stop and ask for directions. Robin and I both had a good laugh as we watched them disappear around the island. See you all soon R&R |
