Nagorno-Karabagh Elderly Project In December, 2004, the A.W.W.A. underwrote a six-month pilot project in Nagorno-Karabagh aimed at providing medical and social support to the elderly population living alone in Stepanakert. The pilot project ended May 31, 2005, and the Board of Directors unanimously voted to continue the funding to support this endeavor. This involvement is a viable extension of the A.W.W.A.’s mission to benefit and support the Armenian community. The project, organized by the Hanganak NGO under the supervision of Dr. Gohar Hovhannisyan, is part of an effort to alleviate the dire situation facing the elderly population living alone who are at a significant disadvantage with regard to health care. Following an assessment of needs, the doctors and nurses who are part of the project are providing medical and social services on an as-needed basis, including drug administration and counseling. The scope of the project reaches 200 elderly, and food is being provided as well as medical assistance. The project provides a continuous mechanism for the elderly to receive care where resources for health care are extremely limited. Dr. Carolann Najarian visited the site early on and reported that the project is very well run and extremely beneficial. This past fall current A.W.W.A. President JoAnn Janjigian visited the facility and was very impressed with the well-run organization and the caring work of the staff, as well as the very obvious need for our funding. The recipients and the staff expressed overwhelming appreciation of A.W.W.A’s support and the realization of our impact on their lives was very heart-warming. |
