Welcome
to the Troop 479 home page!
Troop 479 is part of the Foothills District of the Atlanta Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.
Purpose of the BSA
The Boy Scouts of America was
incorporated to provide a program for community organizations that offers
effective character, citizenship, and personal fitness training for youth.
Specifically, the BSA endeavors to
develop American citizens who are physically, mentally, and emotionally fit;
have a high degree of self-reliance as evidenced in such qualities as
initiative, courage, and resourcefulness; have personal values based on
religious concepts; have the desire and skills to help others; understand the
principles of the American social, economic, and governmental systems; are
knowledgeable about and take pride in their American heritage and understand
our nation's role in the world; have a keen respect for the basic rights of all
people; and are prepared to participate in and give leadership to American
society.
Our mission is to help our boys become
responsible, confident, Godly young men, and to have fun while doing so.

Advancement
Advancement
is an important feature of the Scouting program, culminating in the earning of
the Eagle award. Our program is designed to help each new scout achieve First Class
rank within the first year in the troop. Campouts are designed to reinforce
scouting skills. The troop's program changes as the scout gains experience,
allowing him to advance to Star, Life and eventually Eagle.
Junior
Leader Training
Scouting
is boy-led, but to effectively lead, the scout must be trained. Training is
offered to each Scout as he moves into leadership positions within the troop.
Troop
Visits
Webelos
Dens and others interested in visiting the troop are asked to call the
Scoutmaster at least two weeks in advance.
Religious
Awards
Holy
Trinity Lutheran Church offers the entire God and Country award series for all
young men and women attending a Protestant church. For middle school aged boys,
the church offers the God and Church award, and for high-schoolers, the Living
Faith award.
The
troop encourages scouts who are not Protestant to earn the religious award of
their faith through their church or synagogue. All scouts earning a religious
award are recognized by the troop.
Summer
Camp
Our
troop attends summer camp every year at Camp Woodruff in the beautiful north
Georgia mountains. We usually attend camp in the middle of June. While at camp,
the scouts have an opportunity to earn merit badges, go white water rafting,
learn about nature and have fun. Older scouts have the opportunity for high
adventure programs, including mountain biking, rappelling and a more
adventurous rafting trip.
