About the Author...

Ronald W. Russell served 23 years in the U.S. Navy
and Naval Reserve, including a two-year tour as a staff radioman aboard (then)
Vice Admiral Thomas H. Moorer’s Seventh Fleet flagship USS Providence
(CLG-6) during the 1960s. In his
civilian career he was employed as a field operations manager and technical
writer for telecommunications companies, retiring in 2001. He retired from the Naval Reserve as a chief
warrant officer in 2002.
As a technical writer
the author specialized in equipment instructions, methods & procedures policy,
project documentation, and training manuals.
His first general markets writing exposure was in 2002, in an
international magazine focused on vintage radio equipment. To read the Internet version of that article,

More recently, his
article “Changing Course: the Hornet Air Group at Midway” appeared in
the February 2006 issue of Naval History magazine. The article is an adaptation of Chapter 8 in
No Right to Win. He also writes
book reviews for Naval History and has edited both fiction and nonfiction
manuscripts for other military writers.
The author’s connection
to the Battle of Midway began as a teenager when he became acquainted with a
mentor in radio electronics who was a U.S. Navy veteran and a survivor of the
USS Yorktown, lost during the battle.
That association motivated him toward his own naval career as well as a
life-long awareness of and appreciation for the Battle of Midway.
One of the author’s earliest manuscripts was about
Midway, and research during its preparation led him to the Battle of Midway
Roundtable in 2000. He became its
moderator and editor in 2002, placing him in a position to not only absorb,
sort, and manage a constant stream of information about the epic battle from
first-person sources, but also to aid others in learning about that vital
turning point in the Pacific war. His
stewardship of the Roundtable includes the editing of the association’s weekly newsletter.
The author also
serves as the Midway veterans coordinator for the Navy’s annual Battle of
Midway commemoration in San Francisco.
