Over the past seven years we have acquired and developed many route
sheets for rides in the area. For some time we have thought about
collecting these in computer readable form and making them available
to Western Wheelers or anyone else who could make use of them. As a
result of Bob Harrington's encouragement and the cooperation of
Patrick Goebel, we are finally doing so. As time permits we will scan
the ride sheets in our possession. I hope that others will make their
favorite rides available so that they can be included in this catalog
of rides. This file will be updated periodically and an announcement
will be made in the Flat Tyre, Cycling.org (previously VeloNet), and
possibly other bicycling outlets.
Most of the rides in the initial distribution came from ride sheets
used by the Thursday (10 am) and Tuesday (11 am) groups. Many have
distance and some have altitude information; all use the Western
Wheelers ratings as printed in the Flat Tyre (and reproduced later).
In addition a few ride fragments are included; e.g., the Saratoga Maze
and some one-way routes. These rides and fragments can be used as is,
modified, and/or cut apart to plan your own rides. The lunch stop can
be changed or eliminated.
The ride category (A, B, C, etc.) can be changed to suit your needs.
Most "C" rides could just as well be "B" or "D". Some could even be
"A" rides but distances and/or climb might be too difficult.
Distances and climb information are approximate although, at least in
the distribution, were measured using Avocet Model 50 cyclometers and
so are probably accurate to a few percent. Although these routes
have been tested, some caution should be used as roads are closed at
times and better facilities such as new freeway over crossings do, on
occasion, become available. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
FORMAT:
In order to make this information useful to the largest number of
people, we have chosen to use the simplest possible text format - 76
character lines with no special formatting. This should allow the use
of almost any editor or word processing program on any computer. The
"find", "search", or "locate" facility in these programs can be used
to scan through the index and/or rides for specific streets, starting
points, or destinations. Once a ride of interest is located, it can
be extracted by means of "put", "cut and paste", or other facility as
provided in the program used and then modified and printed.
With the widespread availability of the World Wide Web other possibilities
have become available. For expample all of the browsers can download
and save a file in text or html format ("Save as" in the "File" drop
down menu). Also the browsers have a "find"or locate menu item - usually
in the "Edit" drop down menu item.
Following this general information section are instructions for
downloading the file, submitting additional rides for inclusion, the
Western Wheeler ride rating scheme, common starting locations, the
"change history", and an index to the rides which follow. The index
contains the following information:
(1) Index number, (2) WW Ride Rating, (3) Starting point, and (4) the
destination and/or description of the ride.
We do not plan to edit or verify submitted ride information except to
delete special formatting and to shorten lines over 70 characters.
However, two information lines will be added. The first is a repeat
of the index line. The second will contain the name of the person
who submitted the ride and the date.

ROAD ALERTS:
State road conditions can be obtained by calling CalTrans at
800-427-7623. Enter the highway number. Travel Information (transit,
delays, construction, etc.) can be obtained by calling Caltrans at
511 or 817-1717 (in any area). Additional traffic information can be
obtained by calling the Fast Line at 415-777-1000.

WESTERN WHEELERS RIDE CATEGORIES
The ride rating description was changed in 5/95. The new scheme is as
follows:
RIDE CATEGORY (A-F): Indicates pace as expressed by average speed with
A being the slowest. Average speed refers to speed while riding and is
independent of the length of the ride. A ride with multiple stops may
have the same average speed as one ridden without stops. A & B rides
have frequent to semi-frequent stops to wait for all riders. New and
inexperienced riders are welcome on A rides. On C-F rides there is no
obligation to wait for slower riders if route directions are given.
HILLINESS RATING (1-4): Indicates elevation gain as expressed in feet
per mile with 1 being mostly flat. The hillier the ride, the slower
the average ride speed. If you are unaccustomed to judging ride
difficulty based on the number of feet of climb, or if the ride
description is unclear about the amount of climbing, call the ride
leader for advice and/or additional information.
MILEAGE ESTIMATES: Mileages stated are approximate and have been
known to vary depending on weather and group composition.
RIDE RATING EXAMPLE: "C/2/35" indicates a ride of approximately 35 miles, with between
900 and 1700 feet of climb, ridden at an average speed of 13 mph.

CHOOSING YOUR RIDE CATEGORY: The table above indicates average speeds
for rides with different hilliness ratings in categories A though F.
If you are a new rider, the speeds in your category may seem low
because you know you can ride faster at times. Remember, however, that
the numbers represent the average speed for the entire ride. Please do
not attempt rides significantly beyond your level of experience. If
you are taking your first club ride, err on the conservative side.
If you are unsure in which category to ride on hilly rides
(hilliness ratings of 3 or 4), time yourself climbing Old La Honda Rd.
and compare your time with the time range listed below for your ride
category. If your time is within the range, you can feel comfortable
in riding with that group on hilly rides.
B 40-60 minutes
C 30-40 minutes
D 25-30 minutes
E 20-25 minutes
F Less than 20 minutes
If your time is higher or lower, you should consider riding with
the next faster or slower category. If you choose to ride outside
your category, you should neither push the pace of the group (in the
case of a faster rider) nor expect the group to wait for you at the
top of the hill (in the case of a slower rider).
WEATHER CONSIDERATIONS: Rides on pavement may be canceled if rain
seems likely during the ride. If in doubt, call the ride leader.
RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT: As needed, please try to bring basic tools,
sunglasses and sunscreen, water bottles, food or food money, a
first-aid kit, phone change, "layered" clothing, etc. Bright clothing
is recommended.
MOUNTAIN BIKES: Rides are rated with a letter designating pace (A to
E, with A the easiest). The number following indicates the difficulty
of the hills including both steepness & length (1 to 5, with 1 being
the easiest). The last number indicates the approx. mileage of the
ride. Rides will be canceled by rain at the time or within the 48-hour
period prior to the ride. Other severe weather may also cancel rides.
Call to confirm with the ride leader if you are unsure. All riders
are required to sign a release/waiver before every ride. Minors need a
parent/guardian with them to sign the release.
Ride ratings for rides submitted prior to 5/95:
Expected pace on level ground:
A: UNDER 10 MPH. Relaxed pace, frequent stops to wait for everyone,
new and inexperienced riders welcome.
B: 10-12 MPH. Sightseeing pace, semi-frequent stops at key points to
wait for all riders.
C: 13-15 MPH. Steady pace, rest stops every hour or so, no obligation
to wait for slower riders if route directions given.
D: 15-18 MPH. Vigorous pace, occasional stops, no obligation to wait
for slower riders if route given.
E: 19-21 MPH. Advanced pace, few stops, no obligation to wait.
F: OVER 21 MPH. Racing pace, few if any stops, no waiting.
TERRAIN RATINGS:
1: Flat (except perhaps for occasional overpasses).
2: Rolling Hills (e.g. Canada Rd, a few small hills)
3: Large Hills (e.g. Old La Honda Rd, a 1300 foot climb).
4: Hill mania (multiple long and/or steep climbs).
***SNELL/ASTM/CPSC APPROVED HELMET IS REQUIRED***
ANSI is an old standard. If you have a helmet that doesn't meet one
of the newer standards, it is recommended that you buy a new helmet.
START LOCATIONS:
GUNN HIGH SCHOOL main entrance is on Arastradero Rd just east of the
Foothill Expressway in Palo Alto. Meet in parking lot.
MENLO PARK REC CENTER (BURGESS PARK) is at the corner of Laurel St.
and Mielke Dr. (near Ravenswood Ave) in Menlo Park. Park on Alma St.
ALPINE INN is at the corner of Arastradero Rd and Alpine Rd in the
hills just west of Stanford University.
PALO ALTO CULTURAL CENTER is on Newell Rd just north of Embarcadero Rd
in Palo Alto.
WOODSIDE GRADE SCHOOL (the EX-TOWN HALL) is on the south side of Hwy
84 (Woodside Rd), about 1/4 mile west of Canada Rd in Woodside. (NOT
to be confused with the NEW Woodside Town Hall about 1/8 mile east of
Canada Rd). Park on weekends at the lot just past the school - not at
the school. During the week use the lot at Whiskey Hill and Woodside
Road.
PEERS PARK in Palo Alto is near Park Blvd. and Stanford Ave. (1/2 mi
North of El Camino Real Blvd.)
SUNNYVALE COMMUNITY CENTER is at Remington and Manet.
CHAIN REACTION (Los Altos) is on Homestead at Foothill Expy.
BICYCLE OUTFITTER is off of the Foothill Expy near Miramonte at Loyola
Corners.
SHARON HEIGHTS PARK is at Monte Rosa and Sharon Park Dr off of Sand
Hill.
WESTMOOR SHOPPING CENTER is in Sunnyvale at the corner of Fremont and
Mary.
