2/9/98 Today, I stripped out the interior and we started on getting the engine back into running condition. engine inside seats taking apart the top The car was originally red with red interior. It has a power top and the deluxe interior. It has a remote side mirror. It's got 14" Rally wheels and a rear spoiler. The trunk floor needs to be replaced, along with some rust on the left rear wheel opening. It seems to be the original 327 engine with the 2 speed Powerglide transmission. It has power steering and standard brakes. All the body panels fit beautifully. The doors, hood, and truck open and close great. The chrome is in decent shape. Even the windshield is ok. One of the hinges on the top is broken off and needs to be welded back into place. Should be fun to restore into a driver. 2/15/98 We got the car running this weekend. The guy I bought it from had bought it from someone else a couple years ago in non-running condition. He found out that it had a broken camshaft, so he replaced that and then got it running. Once running, he noticed a miss and further investigation showed a bent valve. He took the head off and had it fixed, then while installing it, he let his god-sons work on it and one of them broke a bolt off in the intake manifold. He never got around to finishing it after that. We removed the broken bolt and re-assembled all the parts. We were lucky and all of the parts were present. The car runs nice after I got the valves adjusted right and the carb tuned. I then discovered that the original Powerglide trans has been replaced with a TH350. 3/28/98 Today I spent the day sandblasting the used convertible top frame that I bought from a company in New York. It came with everythng but the header bow, luckily, mine is in good shape. The frame was very rusty like it was stored outside. I got it completely sandblasted and painted it black. It looks pretty good. I removed the hydraulic motor for the top and hooked it to a battery to see if it worked, and it does not. I will have to order a new one. I also am ordering the hoses and switch. I already have recieved the new top pistons that I ordered. 3/28/98 Today I spent the day sandblasting the used convertible top frame that I bought from a company in New York. I drove the car in the rain with no top on it to the State Patrol inspection station and they checked the VIN and gave me the ok. My dad was following me and said people were looking as they went by. I only got a little wet. On Monday, I transerred the title and got some license plates and am now ready to do the higher dollar work on the car. Whew!!! 12/22/98 Well, it's been pretty cold here in Western Washington the past few days. It's been in the teens and 20's and we usually don't have to deal with that cold of temperatures. The realization hit me yesterday that the Camaro has only straight water in the engine, and no antifreeze. I was not properly prepared for the cold. I went right out to my dad's friend's house where the car is being stored in his barn for the winter to check on it. Just as I thought, the water in the radiator was frozen. We fired up the car and it ran ok, but we noticed that the waterpump was not spinning. I removed the belt from that and we let the car warm up for a couple of minutes. One of the freeze plugs in the side of the block had been pushed out, just like they are supposed to. We removed the radiator and took it into Bob's garage and set a heater on it to thaw. Then we set a small electric heater in the engine compartment to thaw the motor for a couple of days. If I was lucky and caught it in time, there was no harm done except for a freeze plug that needs to be re-installed/replaced. On Thursday morning I will go and check on it again and see if the ice has been melted. If so, we will reinstall the radiator this weekend and get a mixture of antifreeze circulating so this won't happen again. YIKES!!! |
