Speakers 2, Monsoons 1

After The Plague sweep the Speakers in the First Period, the Speakers return the favor in the Second Period last Saturday. The Monsoons easily win three of four in the First Period with little drama. That all changed Monday evening at Riegle Park.

Game One - The Monsoons rake early and notch three in the first off Jordan Zimmermann. Matt Holliday's two-run triple highlights the frame. A Mike (or whatever his name is) Stanton solo blast makes it 4-0 in the fourth.

Daniel Murphy breaks the ice against Justin Masterson with a two-out two-run triple in the fifth. The Speakers plate two unearned runs the following inning thanks to a lead-off triple by Carlos Gonzalez, an Elvis Andrus miscue, and a pair of two-out singles by Albert Pujols and Shane Victorino.

Logan Morrison shatters the tie with an eighth inning solo shot for a 5-4 Speakers win. The Monsoons strand a runner in scoring position in each of the final two innings.

W - JJ Putz (2-3), L - Tony Sipp, S - Neftali Feliz (1)

Game Two - The Monsoons threaten in each of the first three innings and finally break through with a Michael Young two-out two-run single in the third. Mike Aviles knocks his first HR of the season off Cole Hamels in the fourth to cut the lead in half.

Chase Utley scores an insurance run in the eighth on Young's sacrifice fly to complete the scoring in a 3-1 Monsoons victory. Hamels pitches eight strong innings, allowing just five hits. Joel Hanrahan faces the tying run in the ninth, but gets pinch hitter Murphy on a fly to right to close the door.

W - Hamels, L - Matt Cain (3-7), S - Hanrahan

Game Three - Following two tight ballgames, the Speakers march eleven to the plate in the first inning against Ubaldo Jimenez, alghough only half are earned. A walk, six singles and a Matt Weiters error cause the damage. BJ Upton homers in the third for a quick 7-0 margin. Back-to-back doubles by Upton and Murphy tack on another run in the seventh.

Verlander begins the eighth with a three-hit shutout, but errors by both middle infielders (Howie Kendrick and Cabrera) and a pair of two-run doubles (Young and Stanton) bring the Monsoons within three. Since all five runs are unearned, Verlander starts strong in the ninth by striking out James Loney.

Weiters doubles; Andrus singles, but Upton nails Weiters at the plate. Utley leans into a pitch to bring the tying run to the dish with two away. Holliday doesn't miss a Verlander heater and his three-run shot knots the game at 8-8!

The Monsoons pen mows down the next nine Speakers. The Monsoons, however, threaten in the top of the 11th. With one away, Sean Marshall surrenders an Andrus double and Utley short single to put runners at the corners. Casey Janssen Ks Holliday and gets Young on a bouncer to second to end the inning.

Victorino leads off the bottom of the 12th with a base hit, but is stranded at third. Meanwhile, Utley's single would prove to the Monsoons final base runner after an incredibly dramatic comeback.

Murphy coaxes a walk to lead off the bottom of the 13th. David Wright pinch-runs and steals second. Kendrick singles, but Wright has to hold at third with no outs. Gonzalez works a walk to load the bases. Buster Posey swings through strike three for the first out. Jamey Carroll pinch hits for Aviles and lines a single for a walk-off 9-8 win in 13.

Eric O'Flaherty strikes out the side in the top of the inning to earn the win. The moral of this story is no lead is ever safe in OOTL, (especially not when the Speakers are leading). This series turned into one of the more familiar Monsoons-Speakers battles.

W - O'Flaherty (1-0), L - Marmol
