Energy management

Established in 1976, the Energy Management program finds ways for rail transit authorities to reduce power costs by evaluating energy conservation and load management strategies for cost-effectiveness, and by representing authorities in power rate negotiations and purchases. It is considered one of the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) most successful programs. With the uncertainty in energy prices and increased competition in the electric power industry, both conservation and alternative energy sources for rail transit are cost beneficial.

Electric power system evaluation

One thrust of the Train Operations Model is a tool for evaluation of power distribution systems for rail transportation. The TOM is used to determine weaknesses in present power distribution systems and simulation of train operation under suggested improvements. The model is also used as a design tool for developing power distribution systems for new starts and rail line extensions.
