B Parts Catalog

2008

During 2008, Sadie spent most of her time home having small items worked on. This included drilling out broken off screws and bolts, retapping or re-dieing the bolts and nuts to insure easy replacment of parts during reassembly. 2008 also saw the removal of the engine, transmission as well as old wiring harnesses and various assemblies. In February, I attended my second 190SL Wintertech session in Milwalki, Wisconsin. An excellent session focusing on removal of the engine/transmission, rear/front end rebuild, leather work, engine rebuild and a few other maintenance tasks. This session gave me the courage to tackle removing my engine and transmission. I also detected a problem with the one floor pan that I did not have replaced. Bottom line... This floor pan will now be replaced. Harvey picked Sadie up in Late August and I will focus on getting my garage back together. I had to purchase a new air compressor to provide the neccessary CFM's to run my bead blaster. I can not clean and detail the engine and transmission. I am toying with the idea of ordering a Zinc and Cadium plating system to plate the various small parts. Still in the early research phase. When Sadie is returned, I should be able to use the Tilter that I got off Ebay. I will tilt Sadie and do the under pan cleaning, priming and painting. Then prime and paint the trunk, engine compartment and interior of the car. Finally, remove the front end, sand blast, prime and paint. Replace those bushings and other parts that are no longer within tolerance. Oh well, hopefully, this fall will be a mild one and will give me an opportunity to do some painting.

January 2008

Headlight with bracket. Note that this assembly was only used on the very early 190SL years.
(02 January 2008)
I got the idea from Karl Brammer in Pennsylvania. This is a modification to protect against breakage of the hood release cable. Hole drilled where arrow is pointing.
(02 January 2008)
Cut a small one inch hole in the firewall. This aligns with the mechanicals for the hood release. If cable breaks, you can still pop the hood open with a large screw driver from the interior.
(02 January 2008)

Here it shows the hole with a one inch plastic plug. I will place whole into the jut to accomidate this hole.

June 2008

Engine hooked up for removal. Leveler mounted with head bolts. I had to grind some off the leveler to get it to fit correctly.
(15 June 2008)
Engine clearing the engine compartment. So far so good...
(15 June 2008)
Engine cleared and Sadie pushed back out of harms way.
(15 June 2008)
Starting to remove the clutch and pressure plate.
(15 June 2008)
Another showing the removal of the pressure plate. Pressure plate corroded and will be replaced.
(15 June 2008)
Removing the fly wheel from the rear of the engine.
(15 June 2008)
Removing the back plate before mounting the engine to the stand.
(15 June 2008)
Mounting the engine to the engine stand. Purchased the bolts from Bolt Depot. Top two are threaded into the block and bottom two are held on with nuts.
(15 June 2008)
Engine totally mounted to the engine stand. I still have the weight controled by the hoist.
(15 June 2008)
Removing the leveler and hoist. I will have to retighted all the head bolts in the correct pattern and torque since I removed the front and rear two.
(15 June 2008)
Picture of the engine compartment after the engine removal. This will make cleaning, repairing, priming and painting much easier.
(15 June 2008)
Last picture of the engine compartment after the engine removal.
(15 June 2008)
Left side of the engine. I will remove the side cover to clean and replate the cover.
(22 June 2008)
Removed the left side cover. Not a lot of gunk in the engine. Was able to remove all screws without problems.
(22 June 2008)
Another picture showing the insides of the engine. This engine looks like it had been worked on. Very clean..
(22 June 2008)
And another showing the rear portion of the engine.
(22 June 2008)
Picture of the inside of the cover plate. Some rust. Still a usable piece. Will clean, bead blast and plate or paint as recommended by the group
(22 June 2008)
A picture of the left side of the engine block. I have removed the fuel pump, cover and oil filter.
(22 June 2008)
Here is the engine serial number. This number does match my original data sheet for Sadie. While in pretty bad shape, Sadie still has much of her original parts.
(22 June 2008)

A picture of the left side of the engine block. I have removed the fuel pump, cover and oil filter.
(22 June 2008)
Picture of the front portion of the head with cam shaft. A lot of crude on the foward portion but not on the rear portion. This shows the casting number and date of casting (1 2 56).
(22 June 2008)
Here is the timeing chain and sprocket.
(22 June 2008)
Another of the timing chain. Note crude on the cam shaft..

May 2008

This is the original starter from Sadie. I will replace this with a newer more powerful starter.
(27 May 2008)
Here is a picture taken after removal of the starter.
(27 May 2008)
Here is a picture of the rear portion of the transmission where it connects to the drive shaft. The Flex Disk is between the two parts. Note the damage to the Flex Disk. This too will have to be replaced.
(27 May 2008)
Here is a picture of the pressure plate after removal of the transmission.
(12 May 2007)
Picture of transmission after removal.
(27 May 2008)
Another picture of the transmission. Will have to clean and detail this too
(27 May 2008)

Right front floor pan. This was the only one not replaced. It will be now...

March 2008

I almost have the new brake booster tray fitting. The one corner is still a problem.
(20 March 2008)
Timing chain. It seems to be in OK condition. Need to have it evaluated to see if I have to replace it or not.
(20 March 2008)
Picture of engine front. Fan has been removed.
(20 March 2008)
Picture of the front portion of the cam shaft. Picture shows corrosion and "gunk" covering the shaft
(20 March 2008)
Picture of the entire cam shaft. Rear section in much better condition.
(20 March 2008)
Top of head showing MB casting number and date (1 2 56)
(20 March 2008)
Left, rear inner fender. This is the front section. Metal damage will have to be cut out and repaired.
( March 2008)

Right side, rear coil spring. Springs and shocks need to be replaced.
( March 2008)

February 2008

Here is the fuel filter. This is the early model. The later models only had the three holes for the different fuel flows. This has two studs to hold the cork in place.
(02 February 2008)
Both Weber Carburetors have been removed. I will probably replace the Webers; however, We did receive the original Solex's when we got the car.
(03 February 2008)
Now both the Carburetors and the manifold system has been removed.
(03 February 2008)

Here are the two wiring juction boxes under the top portion of the dash. This connects the main wiring harness to the rear wiring harness. Still a lot of rust under the dash..

Here are the two A-Pillars. Note the body last three numbers of the body number stamped on each (631). Very original..
(06 January 2008)
Here is a close up showing the body numbers stamped on the A-Pillars.
(02 January 2008)

A picture of the dual Weber Carburetors. Note the added metal tabs on both mounting studs for the linkage. This is to insure the alignment of the linkage with the Webers.
