The Moderns

On Sacred Doctrine

In us as well as in God, Love must proceed from the Word, that is from the spiritual possession of the truth, in Faith.

And  just as everything which is in the Word is found once more in the Holy Spirit, so must all that we know pass into our power of affection by love, there only finding it resting-place.

Love must proceed from Truth, and Knowledge must bear fruit in love.

Our prayer is not what it ought to be, if either of these conditions is wanting.

And by prayer we understand no other thing than that supreme prayer which is made in the secret depth of the heart --in so far as it is directed to contemplation and union with God.

St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1536)

Ignatius of Loyola gave spiritual leadership to us in many formats ---multi-tasking, with multi-media as we tend to say today.  His personal holiness, the Jesuit Order he founded, and his spiritual writings are some of the most notable expressions of his love of Jesus.  According to the on-line Catholic Encyclopedia  (at: <http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07639c.htm>)  Ignatius had suggested for the title of the brotherhood he founded as "The Company of Jesus". Company was taken in its military sense, and in those days a company was generally known by its captain's name. In the Latin Bull of foundation, however, they were called "Societas Jesu.”  We have come to know them as   The Jesuits.   For a full reading of his Spritual Exercises on-line, GO TO: http://www.ccel.org/i/ignatius/exercises/exercises.html

St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622)

The Introduction to the Devout Life, by Francis de Sales, is a monumental work for the modern world, directed to "the sanctification of the laity and the adaptation of the religious life to the new needs" of changing society.  The vocation to love God, Francis tells us explicitly, is open to every vocation, soldier, shopkeeper, courtier, man of affairs, woman at home, or religious in his/her cell, etc.  For a full ON-LINE reading of his manual of spirituality, GO TO:
