Welcome to Cowlitz River

The Cowlitz River is located just south of Mt. Rainier National Park near the town of Packwood. The confluence with the Clear Fork River provides a number of quality camping sites. The Cowlitz and its forks are renowned for salmon and steelhead fishing. Mt. Rainier is nearby, offering a number of hikes and interesting locales.

Directions to Cowlitz River

  1. Take SR 169 (from I-405) or SR 164 (from SR 18) to Enumclaw.
  2. In Enumclaw, head towards Chinook Pass via SR 410.
  3. Stay on SR 410 through Greenwater and Crystal Mountain.
  4. Arrive at Cayuse Pass and take a right onto SR 123.
  5. Continue on SR 123 through Mt. Rainier National Park.
  6. Continue on SR 123 until it joins US 12.
  7. Continue on US 12 towards Packwood.
  8. Approximately a mile before Packwood, there will be a right turn off US 12 onto Forest Road 1270.
  9. Stay on Forest Road 1270 until you cross the Clear Fork River.
  10. Campsites exist along this road.
