Welcome to Lopez Island 2003

In early October I made a trip to Lopez Island to do a little biking. Lopez is part of the San Juan archipelago and is a wonderful biking destination. The island's rolling hills are challenging but not so strenuous that they are discouraging, while the roads are quiet and free of excessive traffic. There are also several beaches as well as a freshwater lake, so fishing is another option.

The weather was nearly perfect and the riding was fantastic. The skies were iron gray for the entire trip but the temperature was moderate and there was little wind or rain. It was a picturesque journey through fog-soaked harbors and idyllic farmland. With the tourist season winding down, the island was placid which kept the riding very enjoyable. Besides the various beaches and seaside villages, there were a couple of parks on the itinerary. Spencer Spit State Park provided the only off-road biking of the trip. It was completely empty when I rode along the gravel spit.

I was able to find a little time to throw some flies at Otis Perkins Park. I didn't have much luck but it was a beautiful foggy evening and a relaxing interlude. It is quite a captivating experience to be standing in the bay only 50 yards from house boats, knowing they are present yet unable to see them because of the mist.

This was a perfect early autumn vacation and a great way to unwind and ready myself for the upcoming winter season and its decreased recreational opportunities. Next summer I will definitely be returning to the islands for some more riding, perhaps this time I will visit San Juan or Orcas. The San Juans are definitely a first class destination.
