In the winter of 1980, I bought an Olympus XA to take "evidence photos" of Jobst Rides. Who would believe me otherwise? Thirty years later, I'm still riding and taking photos. The camera is digital, but the roads and trails haven't changed - Alpine, Big Basin, Skyline, Old LaHonda, Mt. Umunhum, Summit, Tunitas Creek, Purisima Creek, Stage Road, Gazos Creek, Hwy 1, Hwy 9, Page Mill, Forest of Nisene Marks, Butano Fire Road, Haul Road, Gate 10, Johansen. The Coast Range and Santa Cruz Mountains have no equal.
They're memories that soften with time, those days of our youth when no hill was too steep, no ride too far, no trail too remote. On our way to new adventures we covered just about every trail and road, bushwhacked others. We'd stop to enjoy the scenery, call out birds, cool our heels. On the way back from Corn Roast '81 we took a refreshing dip in East Waddell Creek on a blazing afternoon. Nor will we forget the majestic Tarwater Tree in Pescadero Creek Park. It beckons still, never failing to impress.
So much for the good old days.
