IT IS BETTER TO LIGHT ONE CANDLE.....

Candles of the Month, Summer, 1998: Page 1

June ---- Titanic

Titanic is a combination ice cube and colored wax cube candle, made very large by molding in a heavy cardboard carton that held Rice Krispies, the two-bag box obtainable from discount warehouses (BJs, in our case). (The name was suggested by our neighbor, when the movie Titanic was being advertised.) I sprayed silicone release into the box, and used a tall three-inch cylinder with a thick wick as the center candle. Center candles are important for ice candles, because the holes left by ice melting yield very fast burning candles, and the candle may burn all the way down through the center in a few evenings without touching the external walls of the candle. A center candle slows the burning. I took cubes of colored wax previously made that were the same size as rectangular ice cubes, and a LOT of ice cubes (make extra; it takes a lot more than you'll think) and mixed the two kinds of cubes in a large bowl. I had white-colored (with white candle dye, not plain wax) wax melted and ready. The mixed cubes were poured into the mold resting in a big pan to catch the ice melt, and white wax poured over the lot. The result is a giant iceberg of a candle with colors floating in it. The holes made by melted ice don't show through much on this candle, but will allow a lot of glow-through as the candle burns down inside.
