Ground transportation in Portland, Oregon, takes on several forms.
Here are a few and some estimate of the costs involved.
- Automobile Rental - You're on your own. I haven't rented
a car here in my home area but I would guess that this option can get fairly
spendy. I will warn those planning on renting a vehicle, however, that
Portland's downtown area is NOT a good place for individual cars. There are
numerous one way streets, some of which change to two way for short stretches.
Downtown is oriented toward bus, rail, and foot transportation. Parking can be
expensive and you may have to pay to park your rental car at your hotel as
well.
- Taxi Cabs - As with other cities, this is not
necessarily the cheapest option available. It can cost you upwards of $30 one
way to get from the airport to downtown.
- Airport Shuttles - There are a number of companies that
run van shuttle services to and from the airport. It's not much different than
a cab ride as both provide door to door service. There's usually a discount for
multiple people. You'll have to look up the shuttle services online, in a phone
book, or just go to their area when you arrive at PDX.
- Bus & Train - Portland has a great bus and rail
transit setup run by Tri-Met. I highly recommend this to those on a budget.
Getting from the airport to downtown will cost you less than $2 but could take
a bit longer than the other options. As above, downtown is oriented toward bus,
rail and foot travel.
