Openshelves
December 2002

A holiday scheduling matter: Tuesday, December 24, the library will be closed; Thursday, December 26, library hours will be noon to 4 P.M.

The library passed out candy to 111 children on Halloween night. 58 adults accompanied the kids. Thanks to the board of trustees for providing the goodies.

I welcome this opportunity to express thanks to the other people who have been kind to the library in recent months. Juliet Polaczyk, our newest volunteer, has donated a microscope and some houseplants along with a wooden puzzle of the fifty states; Karen Appleton brought in more toys for the younger children; and Heather Findlay added several puppets to our collection. Walter Mendoza, Jane Cleveland, Tina Miller, Pam Arel, and Marjorie Swain have all given periodicals to the library. This is a great help, as our budget is small. I also want to mention Scott Harkins, from the Reading Greenhouse & Garden Center, who gave two pots of mums to the library early in the fall and put a wreath on our door last Christmas.

A few months ago, three brass chandeliers were discovered in the library attic. Apparently they were retired a couple of decades ago in favor of the hideous fluorescent lights that now hang on the ceiling. John Baumgartner cleaned and rewired the chandeliers and we hope to have them up soon.

A few of the new titles available here: How to Be Alone, by Jonathan Franzen; Q Is for Quarry, by Sue Grafton; Reversible Errors, by Scott Turow; Quentins, by Maeve Binchy; The Uncollected Stories of Patricia Highsmith; and An Anthology of Yiddish Stories from 1382 to the Present.

Library hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 7 P.M. (closed 3:30 P.M to 4 P.M.) and Saturdays from 10 A.M. to noon. The phone number is 5588.

Cordially,
Tony
