Openshelves
May 2002 We have completed our spring series of preschool story hours. A success. We averaged 8 to 11 children each week. Lisa Kaija led the proceedings most weeks and continues to be a treasured resource for the library. Her help is much appreciated by the board and me. We hope to put together a summer reading program for school-aged children, though the preschoolers will be welcome too. I will get the word out as soon as we settle on something. Suggestions are always welcome. We also finished an 8-week run of book discussions, led by Walter Mendoza. We read 5 books. Walter did a marvelous job as facilitator, and supplied food and drink as well. I hope to have regular programming for the adults in the community to go along with all that we do for the children. I want to thank Vickie Anderson-White for re-creating the certificate remembering those who gave funds for the building of the children's room. The print on the old certificate had nearly gone after so many years. Thanks, too, to my tireless volunteer Jane Cleveland for her continuing work. She and I have been working our way through the card catalog, card by card and book by book. We have pulled hundreds of cards that no longer have accompanying books on the shelves. We hope to have the catalog completely current in the next couple of months. I found several old library typewriters, one that may date to the 1940s. They were in the attic. Most are in working order and have been arranged around the library. Many of the children who come in are fascinated with them and love to bang out stories and poems and things. It has been a real pleasure. Library hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays 12 P.M.-7 P.M. (closed 3:30-4) and Saturdays 10 A.M.-12 P.M. The phone number is 5588. Don't hesitate to call or drop in. I am happy to help in any way I can.
