Sample Letter -- Please Take a Few Minutes to Personalize Your Letter

The Honorable
Maryland State Senate (or House of Delegates)

Dear Senator (or Delegate) XX,

I write today to urge you in the strongest possible terms to demand that the Maryland State Highway Administration cease and desist immediately from all action aimed at taking or destroying people's homes or businesses for the Intercounty Connector (ICC) until all legal issues are fully settled in the courts.   The State should also withhold from any action that may damage people's property or their drinking water supplies.

I ask you to sign Delegate Mandel's joint letter, which urges the State Highway Administration to cease and desist.  That agency is threatening to destroy the homes of roughly 40 families.  Many of these families have lived in their homes for decades, some are retired and on fixed income, some have passed their homes down from generation to generation, and others still have just begun their families.

The ICC most likely faces stiff legal challenges in federal court.  The courts could very well reject the ICC, order the State to revise the ICC study, or order the State begin an entirely new study.  The State Highway Administration's aggressive push to take families homes could set up a nightmare scenario in which the State would have wasted tens of millions of tax dollars forcing scores of families from their homes for a highway that cannot be built, soon or ever.

This is very important to me.  The State's aggressive actions are unjust and unnecessary.  I do not want state resources or my tax dollars spent harassing families or forcing them from their homes.  Regardless of where you stand on the ICC, please act immediately to protect these families and their homes.   Please tell me your intentions, and please send me a copy of any correspondence that you send to the State regarding this urgent issue.

Thanks very much for your time.  I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,
