Eve & Roger
Eve and her family have lived in Cashell Estates since 1986. They like living in a quiet neighborhood with large lots and modest houses. When they bought their house, the Master Plan did not show the ICC running through their home.
Since they have lived in their house there have been three studies of the ICC. Every study found the ICC would cost too much and have too few benefits to be worth considering. Eve and her family wonder why so much money is still being spent studying a project which should not be built. They resent having to spend so much of their lives fighting the ICC.
Because of the right of “Eminent Domain”, the State can take people’s homes away from them. The State Highway Administration says homeowners will get "fair market value" for their houses if the ICC is built. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement says they are guaranteed "comparable housing". But what if there isn’t “comparable housing” available? Where else will this family find a modest home on a 1-acre lot, two blocks from the bus line, two miles from a metro station, 3 miles from where Eve’s husband Roger works, 7 miles from where she works? They have lived here for 23 years. How can the State compensate for their memories? For the azaleas, crepe myrtle, rhododendron, forsythia, magnolias, peonies and blueberry bushes they have planted and tended all these years?
All their children’s activities are in the area. The Dogwood Dogs 4H Club, of which Eve is the leader, has been meeting in their home for 15 years. Where will the Dogwood Dogs 4H Club go if they lose their home?
Eve and Roger wonder why their community should be destroyed for a 6 lane toll road that will cost over $3 billion and create more congestion in Montgomery County.
