NELSON POLE
Nelson Pole is a Professor of Philosophy, Cleveland State University, where
he has taught for over 30 years.
Dr. Pole received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the Ohio State University in
1971. His undergraduate degree (1963) was from Monteith College of Wayne State
University (Detroit, Michigan). Monteith awarded what are now called Liberal
Studies Degrees. His concentrations were in philosophy, mathematics and natural
sciences.
Professor Pole is a past president of the American Association of Philosophy
Teachers and of the Central Conference on Teaching Philosophy. He is a frequent
presenter at workshops on the teaching of philosophy.
His primary interests in philosophy have been in philosophy of religion, engineering
ethics, philosophy of science and technology, and logic and computers. His
publications in the philosophy of science and in logic include articles in
Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science and in the Notre Dame Journal
of Formal Logic. Since the late 1980s, he has devoted himself to developing
computerized resources for the teaching of philosophy. His major contribution
is the LogicCoach family of computer
programs for aiding students in mastering all of the standard topics in college
level logic. It is distributed by the Wadsworth Publishing
Company and is customized to accompany several of the texts that they
publish.
His wife is an artist and they have four children, all boys. The oldest teaches
English in South Korea and the others are still in various stages of their
education.
