Q.
Does eating too much cheese cause anyone to
stall??
A.
Some people report that dairy slows them down, while it doesn't affect
others. YMMV.
Q.
What are the best foods to combat cravings?
A.
(DANDR p.279) Food, rich food, fat and protein with little or no carbohydrate.
The best foods for this are macademia nuts, walnuts, pecans, or brazils.
Other foods that stop cravings are cream cheese or rich dessert cheeses.
You can also do this with an artificially addition to heavy cream. If you
are not on induction an avocado is really good and last but not least,
pork rinds.
Q.
I love my morning coffee..just one per day,
but wondered if I should
really
be changing to decaf if I only have the one.
A.That
one cup of coffee probably won't hurt you. YMMV so experiment.
Q.
Can you have protein shakes and bars on Induction
as long as you stay
under
20 a day.
A.
There are more carbs than shown on the labels in most of the bars.
Be
careful. Use them for meal replacement, not as extras.
Q.
Someone told me that ketosis means you are
burning the fat in your
diet..not
necessarily the fat on your body. Is there any truth to
this?
A.
Both. And you burn the fat in your diet before you burn the fat on
your body, so if you are eating too much fat you don't get to the point
of burning your own fat.
Q.
Does drinking lots of water affect the color
of the sticks?
A.The
sticks are designed to measure a certain amount of ketones.
The
concentration of the urine should not make much difference unless you are
measuring at either extreme. Your level of blood ketosis fluctuates all
day long depending on what you eat, and there may or may not be an excess
amount to spill into the urine at any given time. A dark reading indicates
nothing more than the fact that the bloodstream happened to contain a lot
of ketones at that moment, and spilled a lot of them into the urine at
that moment. This is why even if you read negative at certain times during
the day it doesn't mean you are out of ketosis; it just means that
your bloodstream isn't making excess ketones at that moment. You
don't go in and out of ketosis all day depending on your stick reading,
even though you can test positive at one point, and ten minutes later be
negative, or vice versa.
Q.
Can we eat yogurt on this diet?
A.
There is a theory that yogurt actually contains less carbohydrate than
the nutrition labels often quote. This is supposed to be due to the action
of the live bacteria continuing to digest the natural lactose (milk sugar).
This applies only to "plain" varieties of yogurt which contain "live cultures,"
and do not contain added sugar of fruits. Advocates of this idea usually
recommend making your own, but some of the commercial brands are thought
to be acceptable.
Q.
How fast can I expect the weight to come off?
A.
Most people will start with a fast loss, then slowdown to losing between
1/2lb to 2lbs per week. Some people seem to slip right out of fat, usually
men. There will also be times when your weight loss stalls. That is why
it is important to take those measurements when you first start. You may
find you are losing inches faster than the scale can keep up.
Q.
I am on the first week of induction and am
feeling weak and having leg cramps. What can I do?
A,
Try adding a calcium supplement and potassium. It is also suggested that
you add a salad to one meal. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water.
You may also experience headaches, which can be alleviated by upping your
carbs 5-10 grams, if it is not related to caffeine withdrawl. These
symptoms may occur because of the diuretic action of a low carb diet, but
they should only last a day or two.
Q.
What supplements should I be taking?
A.
A good multi-vitamin, calcium/magnesium in a 1500mg/750mg ratio and potassium
from Morton's lite salt or other source.
Q.
How much water should I be drinking?
A.
Water is very important in aiding weight loss. You should be drinking
at least 64 oz. daily PLUS 8 oz. for every 25 pounds excess weight.
