“Goblins’ Gala” – A Costume Parade

The census didn’t count a lot of goblins (none) at the dance.  We did see a lot of everything else, from devils to pirates to sorcerers.  One costume would have taken the prize if there had been one.  Joe Johnson recreated Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday, Mr. President”, serenading Prez, Tom.  FYI, both Tom and Joe celebrated birthdays in October.  Missing was the traditional bobbing for apples.  We couldn’t get insurance to cover the dental work.

The evening started off with a ChaCha lesson from Jim & Pat McMahon.  They did a fine job of presenting it and we saw it in use several times during the dance.  DJ Tom Osterland followed up with a mix of dance tunes that kept most on their feet until it was time to go home

We want to thank the folks who contributed to the food table.  As we have noted before, we couldn’t come close to a spread like that for any amount of money.  While we’re at it, thanks to our dance hosts, Ed Crowley, Richard Horblit, Ivan Kelley, and John Peters as well as Kathy and Karen for sharing.

“Harvest Ball” – November 14th

We were a little early for Halloween and now it’s a bit late for the harvest (except for the cranberries that is.)  But, now that the crops are mostly in, we have time to enjoy some dancing.

At 7:30, Richard Horblit will help us keep up with the ever-increasing popularity of Salsa.  Then, at 8:00, dance to some more music by DJ Tom Osterland.  When the theme of the dance contains the word “Ball”, it signals that we want to dress up a bit.  Suggested attire is semi-formal.  In SSD lexicon: jackets & ties for the gents; somewhat dressy for the ladies.

While there are plenty of tickets now, you will want to make a reservation.  Call Tom at 781-659-4703 or email us at tickets@SouthShoreDancers.org.

Friday Night Dance Update

There will be no dance on November 20 due to First Parish Church’s Harvest Fair.  There will be a dance on November 27, aka, Turkey Friday.  Also, we’re taking Christmas off; no dance on December 25 or January 1.

The Friday Night Dance is still the best bargain going.  Casual dancing in a super friendly atmosphere for only $7.00; or $6.00 if you pay ahead for 10 admissions.  We set that price 14 years ago and it’s still working for us.  We’ll be looking for you.

New Year’s Celebration Tickets on Sale at the November Dance

We’ll begin selling tickets for the January 2nd New Year’s Celebration at the November dance.  We are currently accepting reservations.  News Flash: We are changing caterers.  It has always been our objective to provide an elegant dinner dance for the occasion at a reasonable cost.  Each of the past years, the cost has inched up.  We have selected Family Crest Catering to reset the price point.  Our tickets this year will be $45.00, a $2.50 reduction from last year.  The menu will include a cheese & fruit table, punch, and a variety of passed hors d’oeuvres for starters.  The entrée will include Caesar salad, chef-carved top of round, chicken marsala and green beans almondine followed with assorted miniature pastries.  Please reserve early.

“Dancing With the Stars”

“Only 5 are left.  The tea leaves say Aaron or Kelly are next out (you’ll know by the time you read this.).  Joanna has some baggage with some fans and had her work cut out for her in the quickstep.   Mya turned in a wicked Samba.  Nobody talks about Donny but don’t count him out.  Here’s what’s left of Tom’s list.

Most Likely Finalists

- Singer Mya and Dmitry Chaplin
- Pop star Aaron Carter and Karina Smirnoff
- Singer Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson (included reluctantly because, well, you know.)

Underrated Darkhorses

- Model Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough

Could Surprise Us

- Reality star Kelly Osbourne and Louis Van Amstel

“So You Think You Can Dance”

This one is down to 16 dancers.  Supposedly, this contest is to pick the best all-around dancer as each week they have to dance a different style, sometimes way outside their comfort zones.  The audience voting begins this week.  Last time, the voters picked the bottom two men & women and the judges saved one each.  When we get to the top 10, it will be based only on the votes.  Each contestant has been through auditions and eliminations by this point and is pretty well seasoned.  Check them out at http://www.fox.com/dance/contestants/.
