The Best Hand Plane Resource !
I building this Site Into the Best Hand Plane Resource on the Web and content is now being updated often from now on..
Now there is two schools of thought on refinishing planes.. Notice I did not say Restoring is the first think you should notice.. Many Collectors might think what I do is blasphemy, they do not believe in doing any cleaning other than some mineral sprits and a light cleaning with steel wool.. To use a wire wheel and buffer that makes shutter.. It would also make me shutter if I had a rare collectable plane but the truth is after talking with Patrick Leech the owner of Blood & Gore, one of the very best hand plane resource on the web and everyone interested in hand planes should read at least once.. Patrick told me the only collectable bench planes are Type 1 and Type 2 and I would add Type 3 all the rest are extremely common.. So unless your plane is mint and needs no cleaning it's not a collectable..
To get back to what I was talking about most of the bench planes I refinish would not be looked at twice by a collector and what they don't like is that after I work my magic they would have a lot of interest if they seen it for sale until they realize it's been refinished if they could at all.. The choice is yours, do you have a pare collectable or common user plane? Now how far do you want to take it tuning and refinishing if needed.. This is up to you if you choose to just tune it for totally refinish it....
I have lots of other useful info on the site such as the handle repair and refinishing pages. A Pictorial Stanley Bailey Bench Plane Type Study this will help you figure about what year(s) your plane as made. Stop back often case I am updating the web site with a new look and content ..
Hand Plane Clinic and Refinishing Classes
I had the first free classes on how to refinish hand planes this summer, I had three students that I knew only from the internet forums come.. I think class when well for my first but I soon realized that they would have appreciated learning more of how to plane that how to refinish an old plane..

So the next class was more of a clinic to tune bench planes and show how to use them..
This class I think was much better though I did not get even close to telling what I know as once we stated tuning hand planes the how to when out the door :)

I hope this coming Spring to start having free clinics every few months..
We talk hand planes from 10:00AM to about 1:00PM when we break for some hamburgers, salad, chips and drinks for a good hour and continue with tuning planes for the rest of the day..The main purpose was to have a day out with tool people and have a good time with people that share our passion for hand tools..
