Digital Cameras
HP Photosmart C200cl
My first experience with digital cameras. One megapixel.
More point and shoot than anything else but still capable
of giving nice photos at snapshot size. Can close focus
to 8 inches. Can't use right now because I reprogrammed
the compact flash cards in a third party reader and it
made it impossible for the HP to use them. I'm going to
get the new Imation multi-format card reader (which is
highly recommended on rec.photo.digital) and hopefully it
will do a correct low-level format and I will be able to
use the camera again.
Olympus C-3040Z
Great camera at 3.4 megapixels. I got it factory
reconditioned at a very low price. At 3.4 megapixels I am
getting some very nice images that print great on my
inkjet printer at 8 x 10 inches. It's a pleasure to work
with these images since there aren't any dust specks,
dirt or scratches to touch up in photoshop. I strongly
recommend getting their CLA-1 Conversion Lens Adapter
and a step up ring. I did not use their 43 to 55 mm step
up ring but a standard 43 to 49 mm step up ring since
49mm filters are pretty easy to come by. I keep this and
a filter on at all times to protect the lens and the zoom
mechanism as the extension and a cap will still allow the
lens to hit the cap and possibly do some damage. Their 43
to 55 just seems to intrude too much into the viewfinder
image. I think a polarizer is also a good idea since I
did some tests and it seems to make the daytime images
much better. I'll be ordering a 49mm circular polarizer
in the near future. I did find that the lcd screen is
almost impossible to see in the bright sun - one of those
new fold up hoods that shield the lcd screem may help in
this area. I like this camera and will skip the 5
megapixel generation and probably try to hold out for
affordable 35mm full frame digital sensor camera. Moore's
"law" still seems to be in effect for
electronic equipment.
