William Hutcherson from Spotslyvania County, VA in the mid 1700’s |
My family Hutchinson/Hutcherson line is descendent from William Hutcherson who was from Spotsylvania County, Virginia. The first known Hutcherson in this County was William Hutcherson who was imported by Larkin Chew who sold him 100 acres Nov. 5, 1722 as per “a History of Early Spotsylvania” (page 75) by James Manfield and listed in “Spotsylvania County Records 1721-1800” (page 90) edited by William Crozier. They may have come from Ireland as William Lynn, Doctor of Physic, of Fredricksburg, in Will Book A in “Spotsylvania County Records 1721-1800” (page 350) dated Oct. 21, 1757, mentions David and William, “two eldest children of my sister Elizabeth Hutcherson in Ireland.” This William Hutcherson, as per Will Book D, “Spotsylvania County Records 1721-1800”, page 20, died St. George’s Parish, Oct. 31, 1762, p. July 4, 1763. Wit. William Wood, James Hutcherson, John Sutton. Ex. My wife and mother. Leg. Estate to my wife and mother (no names given). Page 42, editor’s note. In the probate, Margaret Hutcherson and Sarah Coleman, qualified as executors. The bond states Margaret Hutcherson, Edward Coleman and Sarah, his wife. In Will Book E, “Spotsylvania County Records 1721-1800” , page 29, states Hutcherson, William, Berkeley Parish, d. Feb 27, 1771, p. Feb. 16, 1775. Wit. James Cearnell, Beverley Winslow, Ann Parker, George Stubblefield, Julius Lane. Ex. William Parker and Alexander Parker. Leg. Wife Ruth, my plantation and the whole of my estate during her widowhood, and afterwards to be divided thus, - son William and John one shilling each, as they have already been provided for; son Robert, the half of my land whereon I now live; son Charles, the remainder of the tract whereon I now live; daughter Hannah and daughter Mary Ann, the wife of Henry Coleman. Page 109 Also, in Will Book E, page 29, John Hutcherson, Spotsylvania County, died Oct. 6, 1774, p. Nov. 17, 1774. Wit. William Hutcherson, Charles Hutcherson. Ex. nephew John Hutcherson and friend James Coleman of Orange Co. Leg. Wife Martha; nephews Robert Hutcherson and Charles Hutcherson, sons of deceased brother William Hutcherson; William Hutcherson, son of my nephew John Hutcherson, who was son of my said brother William. Page 89. In the Harrison Circuit, Spotsylvania Deed Book T, page 509, dated Jan. 16, 1813 between John Hutcherson, Mary Ann Coleman, Jacob Coonrod and Caty, his wife late Caty Coleman of Harrison County, Carter Hutcherson of Campbell County, Charles Hutcherson, Charles Phillips and Eaney, his wife late Eaney Hutcherson, heirs and representatives of Robert Hutcherson, dec’d of Clark County, late of the State of Kentucky on the one part, and William Terry of the County of Spotsylvania of the State of Virginia of the other part. Have granted bargained sold released and quit claim and by these presents doth hereby release and quit claim to a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the Counties of Orange and Spotsylvania in the State of Virginia ….known by the name of John Hutcherson’s old field and being a tract of land ….by his last will and testament devised to Robert Hutcherson and Charles Hutcherson and William Hutcherson, a son of his brother’s son John. Received Sept. 22, 1814 In Old Will Book 3, page 377, Carter Hutcherson, of the County of Butler in the State of Ohio, do make and publish this last will and testament. To my wife Elizabeth Hutchinson….; at the death of my above named wife, Elizabeth Hutchinson, I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Phebe Hutchinson, now wife of Hiram Smith one hundred dollars; ….following named children William Hutchinson, Milton Hutchinson, Harriet Hutchinson, wife of Lowerry Stephens, Sanford Hutchinson, Washington Hutchinson, Robert E. Hutchinson, Jonathan C. Hutchinson, Elizabeth R. Hutchinson, wife of Lewis Stephens, and Enoch L. Hutchinson…. Written and sealed Aug. 25, 1841, p. Sept. 26, 1850.
