John Hutchinson

b. 1794 Connecticut
d. 1822

My DNA tests show that I descended from Richard Hutchinson and his son, Joseph of Nottinghamshire, England.  Richard and family immigrated to Salem, Massachusetts in 1634.

I joined the project in an effort to push back my understanding of our family history. 

I’m posting this in the hope that you might be able to help me, and perhaps I can help you with some additional information on the family.

I am descended from Charles Eugene Hutchinson (b. 07 Oct 1818, Carlton, Orleans, NY; d. 14 Oct 1900, Fremont, Tuscola, MI) and Eliza Barbara Dyer (b. 26 Apr 1824, Albion, Orleans, NY; married 04 Apr 1850, Carlton, Orleans, NY.

Charles and Eliza evidently moved from Orleans Co, NY to Tuscola Co, MI between 1851 and about 1855.  US Census data consistently indicates that Charles’ father was born in Vermont, and his mother in NY.

Their third son Elmer, was by great-grandfather. (b. Aug 1859, MI)

Elmer’s first son was Frank LeRoy Hutchinson -- my grandfather (b. 19 May 1887 in Vassar, Tuscola, MI)

My father was LeRoy Elmer Hutchinson (b. 07 Apr 1919, McBain, MI; d. 11 Dec 1990, Leslie, MI)

The family migration from Vermont to New York to Michigan agrees with family stories.  Grandpa Frank used to tell of an ancestor was a spy (scout?) in the Revolutionary War.  According to his tales, our ancestor fled from the British across thin ice.  In one variation, he ends up under the water and breathes from an air pocket.  In another, he escapes and his pursuers go through the ice.
