Sailing Programs & Schedule

Pee-Wee
An introductory sailing course for the little guys and gals, ages 5 to 7.  Students learn the names of parts of a boat, how to tie knots, and principles of the wind.  This is a 6 hours course taught in 3 two-hour sessions.  As a grand finale, students go for a brief sail with an experienced sailor.

Learn-to-Sail
Ten day courses taught in popular and safe Optimist Dinghies by a US Sailing-certified Instructor.  Students learn the basics of sailing, knot tying, safety, and are out on the water daily (weather permitting).  This course is suited for children ages 8 to 14 that have had little or no sailing experience.  Learn-to-Sail students may participate in our RHYC Optimist Green Fleet Regatta in July.

Advanced
Two-week sessions with an emphasis on racing rules and tactics. This course is best for children 8 to 14 who have completed a Learn-to-Sail program or the equivalent and are ready to advance to the next level of sailing and racing.  Students in this class will have the opportunity to participate in RHYC Junior Regattas and other CBYRA Junior Regattas.

Racing Team
Team sailors get intense racing tactics and practice to ready them to participate in regattas on the Chesapeake bay and nearby venues. The team is focused in Optis and Laser Radials and 420s.  Students at this level will have participated in both Learn-to-Sail and Advanced or equivalent sailing programs and are ready to refine their racing skills in a team environment.  Students on the racing team will be participating in CBYRA Junior Regattas in the Chesapeake Bay and vicinity.

Adult
Learn to sail on your own schedule in centerboard or small keel sailboats. Private lessons can be arranged for weekdays or weekends.  Adult Registration Form

For Women Only / For Men Only
Introduction to Small Boat Sailing is held each spring and fall for men and women.  This course offers a one day class including a two hour classroom basics of boat parts, boat rigging,  knot tying lessons, and sail theory followed by an afternoon of sailing on Club 420s.  Each participant gets a chance to skipper the boat.  We use the US Sailing book "
Start Sailing Right".  This is a very enjoyable class for participants!
