For last year's Red Scarf Project I had made two scarves and wanted to get more in under the wire, but I was running out of time. I needed a unique but simple pattern that I could chug through without having to pick up a cable needle; since unisex scarves were requested, lace was out. Thus the Basketweave Scarf was born.
The scarf does not really have a "right" and "wrong" side; the chart shows the scarf as viewed from the side with the double rib. The other side looks very similar, but with a single rib instead of a double one.
Materials: About 300 yards of worsted- or bulky-weight yarn and needles of appropriate size. I used Berroco Foliage and size 11 needles; my scarf was about 7 inches wide and 6 feet long.
Gauge: I think I got about 4 sts to the inch in pattern. On my square done in worsted-weight yarn on size 7 needles I got about 5 sts to the inch. YMMV, of course, and if you're looking for a specific width, by all means swatch.
Knit the plain sts on side 1 and purl them on side 2; purl the dotted sts on side 1 and knit them on side 2.
Cast on a multiple of 6 sts plus 3. I used 27 sts for the scarf and 39 sts for the square.

Repeat these 6 rows for pattern. End with row 3 if you like symmetry.
If you want to alternate the blocks of knit and purl between the ribs, try this one.
Multiple of 12 sts plus 3.
