Brook Trail Scarf

For this pattern I used another type of reversible cables, where the knit and purl parts of the cable change places with each other so that the cables appear the same on both sides.

The scarf does not really have a "right" and "wrong" side; the chart shows the scarf as viewed from the side where all the cables are worked. The even-numbered rows are worked on this side.

Materials: Three skeins Berroco Ultra Alpaca, color Redwood. You'll probably need about 700 yards of worsted-weight yarn to be on the safe side, a bit less if you use a heavier-weight yarn. You'll also need a needle of appropriate size for the yarn and a cable needle if you use one.

Gauge: I used a size-5 needle and got about 8 1/2 sts to the inch in pattern; the scarf is about 7 inches wide. I'm a pretty tight knitter, though. My scarf is quite deep and dense; if you want a more fluid drape, try a lighter yarn or a bigger needle.

Note: all of the cables in this pattern are simple, but there are an awful lot of them; after doing the first two-thirds with a cable needle, I finally broke down and learned to cable without it. Wendy and Grumperina, among many others, have excellent tutorials (google cable without needle and you'll find lots).
