Here is a simpler scarf with baby cable ribs on both sides.
The scarf does not really have a "right" and "wrong" side; the chart shows the scarf as viewed from the odd-numbered side. On row 2 of the pattern the baby cables are worked on the other side; this row is shown as it faces the knitter in red.
Materials: About 450 yards of worsted-weight yarn. I used Plymouth Indiecita Alpaca, which, being heavy, stretched a bit as I knit it. If using wool, you might need about 500 yards to be on the safe side, a bit less if you use a heavier-weight yarn. You'll also need a needle of appropriate size for the yarn.
Gauge: I'm using a size-6 needle and getting about 8 1/2 sts to the inch in pattern; the scarf is about 5 1/4 inches wide unblocked. I'm a pretty tight knitter, though.

Left twist: knit the second st on the left needle through the back loop, then knit the first and second sts together through the back loops and slip them from the needle together. |

Right twist: knit the next 2 sts together, then insert the right needle between the first and second sts and knit the first st again, then slip both sts from the needle. |

Purl braid (odd side): purl the second st on the left needle, then the first st, then slip both sts from needle together. |

Knit braid (even side): insert the right needle between the first two sts on the left needle and knit the second st, then knit the first st, then slip both sts from needle together. |
