I made this bun snood to match my daughter's ballet leotard. This pattern is very easy and quick to make, and a snood would make a nice gift for anyone who likes to wear her hair up.
Materials: yarn of your choice (I used elann Esprit for this one), needles a size or two larger than you'd normally use with the yarn (I used a size 7), tapestry needle, hair elastic.
The pattern sometimes specifies a yo at the beginning of a needle, sometimes at the end. I placed the yo's so that I'd never have to move a stitch from one needle to the other to decrease.
You can continue working this pattern more or less indefinitely, depending on the size of the bun you wish to ensnood (the more sts you end up with, the larger your hair elastic will need to be). Stopping points are noted in the pattern. When you hit your stopping point, proceed to the grafting instructions.
Cast on 6 sts and divide between 2 circular needles. Join.
Round 1: *k1, yo. 12 sts.
Round 2 and all subsequent even-numbered rows: knit.
Round 3: repeat round 1. 24 sts.
Round 5: *yo, k1, yo, sl1-k2tog-psso.
Round 7: *yo, k3, yo, k1. 36 sts.
Round 9: *ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k1, yo.
Round 11: *sl1, k2tog, psso, yo, k3, yo.
Round 13: *k1, yo, k5, yo. 48 sts.
Round 15: *yo, k1, yo, ssk, k3, k2tog.

For a very large bun, work starting with round 21 as follows.
Round 21: *yo, k7, yo, k1. 60 sts.
Round 23: *ssk, k5, k2tog, yo, k1, yo.
Round 25: *ssk, k3, k2tog, yo, k3, yo.
Round 27: *ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k5, yo.
Round 29: *sl1-k2tog-psso, yo, k7, yo.
Round 31: *yo, k1, yo, ssk, k5, k2tog.
Round 33: *yo, k3, yo, ssk, k3, k2tog.
Round 35: *yo, k5, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog.
Round 37: *yo, k7, yo, sl1-k2tog-psso.
Graft the snood to the hair elastic as follows.
Cut the yarn leaving a tail several feet long, about 3/4 inch (2 cm) for each st plus extra to weave in. The yarn will come from the last st of the previous round; begin with the first st on the first needle.
Pass the needle through the first st from back to front as shown.
Pass the needle over the top of the elastic and behind it. Pass the needle through the first st again from front to back, then through the second st from back to front. Slip the first st off the needle and tighten yarn.
Repeat for each st.
Weave in tails and wear proudly.
