"In Britain, hereditary surnames were adopted in the 13th and 14th centuries, initially by the aristocracy but eventually by everyone. By 1400, most English people and Scottish people had acquired surnames, but many Highland Scots and Welsh people did not adopt surnames until the 17th century, or even later."

Southern Mountain Rifle by John F. Bergmann
Rifles built in Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee in the early 1800s by gunsmiths who brought with them the designs and styles they had learned in the east, built guns that met local needs using the materials provided by the land around them.   One important difference between these guns and the fancy rifles from the east was the use of iron for fittings, instead of brass. Walnut and curly maple, as seen above, were the favorite woods for stocks.
