Harden Owens, the earliest known progenitor of our branch of the Owens family is first found in Russell County, VA in 1810. On March 6, 1810, Harden along with Reese Owens, Nicholas Owens and Rhody Owens were apprenticed out by the Overseer of the Poor in Russell County Court. On June 3, 1812, a William Owens appears before the Russell County Court and files a motion that states, "... two of his children are bound apprentices by the Overseer of the Poor, one to Abednego Kiser and the other to James Smith and that he is now able to maintain them himself...." On July 7, 1812, Abednego Kiser and James Smith appear in Russell County Court and are asked "...to show cause if any they can why two children of William Owens bound to them by the Overseer of the Poor should not be taken from them and given up to said William Owens but failing to show such cause...." the children were returned to William and "...the indentures by which they have been bound cancelled."
Is this William Owens the father of Harden? Y-DNA will provide the answers.
