Our copy of the Muth family crest was made for us by Otfried Eger, who's family has a much older copy.  Mrs Eger's maiden name was Muth, though she said she had traced her family back seven generations and had not found a connection with our's.  The Eger's lived at 45 Hauptstrasse, Obrigheim, which is right across the street from the old Muth home (that is believed to be pictured in an old album.)  My father said that a relative of Mrs Eger's, whom we meet when we visited in 1970, was the "spitting image" of his aunt Emma (also in the album).

When Otfried sent us our copy, he included the following information (which is, unfortuantely, all I know about it at this time):

The Muth's, descended from the Electorate of Kulmbach, are an honest and good generation.  They have in their crest in the black quarter, a lion with a rose, symbolising the meaning of the family name -- "Mut" meaning "Courage" -- and at the same time, tendeness [or chivalry?].  The crest has on the top a crowned helm and a cock, the latter being the symbol of vigilance.  The crowned helmet is to show not only the honesty of the family, but also that a member was employed at the royal court.  The crest was given to the Muth family by Kaiser Fredrich the Thrid, anno 1442.
The reason the crest was granted is not known, but might be inferred from the symbolisim involved.
