Colorado - During the decade of 1910-1920, the United States was beset with many problems. This was just a few short years after Kiwanis was formed. World War I was followed by the worst epidemic of influenza in history, which struck the U.S. with particular force. In spite of our national woes, Robert J. Williams of Denver, Colorado, conceived the idea of forming a service club in his city and wrote to Kiwanis, which was formed only a few years before in 1915.
Kiwanis sent two organizers to help Mr. Williams get his club started. D. F. Westcott and Alben C. Stirners arrived on February 2, 1918, and began operation in the Savoy Hotel. This was the first club in Colorado. The new club began with 206 charter members endowed with the desire "To Build".
The official designation "Colorado District" was conferred seven months later, on September 25, 1918. Raymond H. Turver was elected to serve as the first district governor, serving until November 2, 1919. The charter president of the Denver Club was A. T. Monson, with R. J. Williams serving his club in the capacity of secretary. The club was so successful that it sent delegates to the first International Convention in Providence, Rhode Island that very year.
