We have a cozy cottage for rent on Fowler River, a clear mountain stream in Alexandria, New Hampshire. The cottage is about 50 feet from the river, which cascades over rapids and a small waterfall into an 8-foot deep pool for swimming. There are lots of boulders in the river good for sun bathing, sitting with your feet in the water, and generally lazing around. The backyard, next to the river, has a picnic table, lawn furniture, and a campfire pit.We have a cozy cottage for rent on Fowler River, a clear mountain stream in Alexandria, New Hampshire. There are three bedrooms, one with a full bed, one with two twin beds, and the third has a full bed in an unheated, unattached building. For added sleeping, there is a pull-out couch in the living room that folds out to a twin+ bed. So it sleeps 6+ in the summer, 4+ in the winter. It is winterized with good insulation and gas heat.
The cottage is about 600 square feet plus the unheated bedroom, and is a very nice space to be in. The main living space is an L-shaped open area with the kitchen next to the dining room/living room. A small wood stove with a glass front is nice for evening fires. Large sliding glass windows in the dining room/living room area afford a great view of the river. There is a small deck overlooking the back yard and the river.
The cottage is in the lakes district of New Hampshire, in the foothills of the White Mountains (it is just a few miles east of Mount Cardigan and west of Newfound Lake). It is about 115 miles from downtown Boston, 100 miles of which are on I-93. So it's about a two hour drive from Boston.
Closest place is the back yard. 15 to 30 second walk from recliner #1. Add another 5 seconds from main bedroom. Subtract 10 seconds from deck. Water is a bit chilly (mountain stream).
Wellington State Park on Newfound Lake, a few miles down the road. There is a large beach at the park, as well as a public boat launch.
Welton Falls, a mile or two upstream on Fowler River, is a chasm cut by the river followed by a nice set of rapids and falls where you can hang out on the rocks with your toes in the water. Great place to hike to, either from the AMC lodge at the base of Cardigan Mountain, or a short walk in from a dirt road (parking). See below for directions.
Sculptured Rocks is a very interesting chasm cut by a river through bedrock. It's not far away - a 10 minute drive on the other end of Newfound Lake in Groton. Go there even if you don't want to swim. It's a beautiful place.
Cardigan Mountain is a few miles up the road (follow the signs) and is a great day hike. There is an AMC lodge at the base, from which there are many trails up the mountain. The bald top of the mountain is great for 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding hills and the White Mountains. For a shorter hike, walk down to Welton Falls from the AMC lodge.
You can easily go the White Mountains, do a day hike, and return to the camp the same day (you can see Mount Washington from Mount Cardigan). Tons of things to do in the White Mtns. like the Mount Washington cog railway, the Basin, the Flume (a must see), and lots of hiking.
Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in New Hampshire, is 30-40 minutes away. Endless things to do - swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, biking, golfing, go-carting, shopping, dining, strip malling, the whole tacky kitsch enchilada.
Lots of skiing in White Mountains - too many to list.
There is cross-country skiing on Mount Cardigan a few miles up the road. Call the AMC lodge at 603-466-2727 for more information.

The town of Bristol is about 5 miles away. It has numerous restaurants and shops.
There is a small, well-stocked but a bit expensive supermarket (Shackett's) about 3 miles away on West Shore Road (you'll pass it on the way to the camp). In Bristol on Route 104 is a larger supermarket (Crisenti's) where all the locals shop.
