Mind mapping is an intuitive, brain-based technique for studying, planning and making notes. It takes advantage of the brain's own principles of memory storage and retrieval.

    1. It is a map. The most primitive and often the most powerful memory tool is the mapping function. It lies at the heart of the technique of loci(places) that has been used for thousands of years.

    2. Because you create relationships that are meaningful for you, the structure of the material fits your personal preferences.

    3. Mind mapping enhances comprehension. In the process of creating the mind map you must engage the material, not just copy the words.

    4. Mind mapping enhances retention by calling upon multiple sensory systems to engrave the material in consciousness. Because it allows the material to be deeply encoded (it is personally designed, structured according to your own perceptual style, and your own understanding), mind mapped material is more likely to be remembered.
