Thank you for your interest in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine, the fastest growing oriental method of health care in America today. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), a 3000+ year-old medicine, is the most widely used medicine in the world. It is a complete medicine (as is western medicine), meaning that it can stand alone in diagnosing disease and prescribing treatment for a vast amount of health problems. Because it is a complete medical system, many people have chosen Chinese medicine as their primary health care system. It can also be used as a complementary medical system to western medicine because it is better at diagnosing and/or treating certain types of conditions and diseases, particularly, chronic diseases, gynecological problems, fertility issues and diseases that go undiagnosed by western medicine. Traditional Chinese medical systems acknowledge the unique aspects of every person's response to disease-causing imbalances. They are the original and best studied examples of successful patient-centered medicine. As a result, the goal of high level acupuncture and herbal medical practice is to create individualized programs of therapy. Only comprehensive management can best address chronic and complicated problems, with the goal of treating the many manifestations of disease at a deeper level than merely reducing symptoms. Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal medicine are applied to each condition according to the traditional Chinese methods of evaluation. A disease may cause different patterns of symptoms and signs in different people. Each would receive a different therapy. Sometimes the same therapy can help different diseases also, so it takes an expert in Chinese medicine to coordinate your treatment. Time will prove that traditional methods of treatment like Chinese medicine will help to reduce medical costs and improve results. The suffering of disease can be reduced by the methods discovered by ancient Chinese physicians. Contrary to popular myth, there is no "big book of acupuncture" that a physician can consult with a formula of treatment for every disease. The specific choice of points and effectiveness of acupuncture is the result of correct diagnosis and the skill and experience of the acupuncturist in choosing the correct tool and using it properly. As with surgical operations, each treatment must address the patient's presentation. As the condition responds, the treatment should be adapted to reflect the new reality. Often, when I am consulted by a patient who tells me "I already tried acupuncture and it didn't help", I find that the diagnosis was incorrect or the practitioner has not had enough training or experience to construct a treatment plan. Only a person who believes all surgeons are alike would believe that all acupuncture is the same. Xiaoyan studied Traditional Chinese Medicine in her native China and received her MD in 1988.
