INSTALLATION ------------ The installation was painless and smooth, even though I'm running a somewhat hacked up version of kernel 2.4.20, rather than the Redhat kernel. V.90 ---- Operation as a plain V.90 modem worked fine for the few minutes I tested it. Downlink rate was always 48000. Uplink rates weren't great, connecting at 14400 to an Ascend Max, 21600 to a USR Total Control and 21600 to a Livingston PM3. I did not try PPP as I have a higher speed USB cell phone for WAN networking connections. FAX --- I created a 260K FAX from /usr/share/ghostscript/7.05/examples/tiger.ps. I sent the FAX using the "fax send" command from the efax package. The .efaxrc I used was fairly standard: DEV=modem VERB="ewin" # show errors, warnings, progress & negotiation FROM="+1 509 695 5871" NAME="Rick Richardson" This image is complex and long enough that if there is a problem with the FAX modulator, they will usually show up with this image. The connection was made at 14400 with no ECM, and no problems were noted in the image on the receiving end. VOICE ----- I also tried a conference call telephone recording application that uses the AT#VRX command to record voice to a file. When set for 8-bit PCM with AT#VBS=8 it worked perfectly. However, when set for 16 bit PCM, the modem delivered 8-bit PCM instead. I did not try 4-bit ADPCM as I have no idea which flavor of ADPCM the modem outputs. CALLER ID --------- I tried to use a caller ID logging and telemarketer dialer killing application. Although the modem accepted the AT#CID=1 and AT#CID=2 commands, I could not get it to output any caller ID information. The modem was able to play the SIT tones to kill incoming telemarketing calls, though. Unfortunately, without caller-id, this is a manually invoked operation. SUMMARY ------- All in all, very nice. Caller ID support is the only thing that is on my wish list. Sasha K et al: great job on the Linux port!!!! -Rick
