An assessment can provide helpful information when a child's functioning is not consistent with their capabilities in one or more areas. Sometimes parents may wish to know what their child's capabilities are including areas of strength and weakness. This is often the case as young children prepare for entrance to school. Other times, parents may notice their child may have lost previously acquired skills or is experiencing some emotional distress. In some cases, parents are seeking a second and more thorough opinion or would like assistance with an identified problem.

There are many kinds of assessments with each serving a different purpose. Depending on the presenting question(s), an assessment may be relatively brief or extended. Children with early institutional or ambiguous histories or pre/perinatal medical conditions can present complex profiles requiring a comprehensive assessment to yield the most useful information. Additionally, findings from an assessment help establish realistic expectations about a child's functioning within a developmental framework. In turn, realistic expectations serve to enhance the quality of the parent-child relationship and facilitate effective parenting skills, thereby supporting the whole family. Assessments utilize up-to-date, age-appropriate, individualized, reliable and standardized measures.
