Lassen Volcanic National Park is in northern California (about 60 miles east of Redding). Prior to the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in Washington, Mt. Lassen was the most recenly active volcano in the lower United States. The park is a fascinating conglomerate of serene woods, wildflowers and beautiful lakes amid bare volcanic landscapes.

The area is also thermally active, with hot springs, fumaroles (steam vents) and bubbling mud pots scattered throughout the park (see next page).
