Once Upon a Mattress
This show is a well-known musical comedy that opened off-Broadway on May 11, 1959 (so the BCC is doing a golden anniversary production!), and then moved to Broadway. It was written as a fanciful adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson's The Princess and the Pea. Once Upon a Mattress is a fun jaunt, with catchy tunes, lively dancing, and many laughs - terrific fare for the start of the holiday season.
First Night
Ideally situated right after the New Year, this romantic comedy features Danny Fleming and Meredith O'Connor, two somewhat lonely souls in their mid-thirties who encounter each other on New Year's Eve as Danny closes up the video store at which he works. He recognizes her as the girl he had a crush on in eighth grade - but who went on to become a nun. She has remembered him and has wondered whether there might be a different course for her life outside the confines of her convent. It's a heart-warming show that will surely take the chill out of your January days.
Proof
So familiar is this story to many of us that it seems odd it was only first performed in 2000. Its fame spread with its Drama Pulitzer and its Tony (for Best Play) in 2001. Then its release in 2005 as a film, starring Anthony Hopkins and Gwyneth Paltrow, brought further attention. The complex story tells of Catherine, the daughter of a deceased and ultimately mad math genius, Robert. She wrestles with her own fears of impending madness, with the refusal of others to see her own extraordinary mathematical ability, with her sister's conviction that Catherine is unstable, and with her feelings toward Hal, a former student of her father's. This show has four choice roles that are sure to attract the Cape's finest.
Arsenic and Old Lace
This classic centers on the Brewster family, for whom the term "eccentric" may have been coined. The kindly aunts who dispatch lonely souls with their laced elderberry wine, the odd brother who returns from a life of staying ahead of the law by having (in the most inept way) transplantation of facial parts from his own murder victims, the brother who imagines himself at the Panama Canal as he digs graves in the basement...it's a wholesome crew, along with ten or so other lively characters. Witty and fast-paced, it will be a killer of a production to round out the year.
