Climb aboard the USS Relunctant for an inside look at Navy life during World War II! The play takes place on the U.S. cargo ship that supplies the troops in the Pacific during the final months of the war. Life on board is tedious, and the men are frustrated and bored. They hate their dictator captain but feel affection for Mister Roberts, one of the officers. The play focuses on Mister Roberts' attempts to get transferred to combat duty, along with his relationship with his men, and his conflict with the captain.
Mister Roberts was originally written as a bestselling novel by Thomas Heggen. Many of the comic elements originated from Heggen's real life experiences aboard the USS Virgo, on which he served as a lieutenant from 1944 to 1945. He would later work with Joshua Logan to make it into a play.
